Expo artifacts up for auctionPublished: 03 Nov 2009 07:02:01 PSTA desk screen from the 1904 fair depicting Mary and Jesus dressed in Qing clothes. By Liu Junhuan With the 2010 Shanghai World Expo fast approaching, related events are gathering steam. The auctioning of world exposition artifacts, which includes around 100 precious world expo-related antiques and artworks, will be held next week in Beijing and has attracted international collectors and enthusiasts from both home and abroad."This is not just an auction. Participants will get a clue into the long history of world expos if they observe these works carefully," explained Guo Xueguang, general manger of the Stamp and Coin Department of China Guardian Auctions, the event organizer. The auctioning of signifi cant pieces is not only aimed at providing a platform for collectors to exchange their wares from previous expos, but also o. ers a rare opportunity for a glimpse of China’s connections with the event, according to the auction house."Amazingly, China made her debut at world expos as early as 1851 when the fi rst fair was held in London," Guo said. "By staging such an auction, we hope to arouse people’s interest in exploring China’s passion in this grand cultural and technological festival."Most of the pieces to be auctioned have never been shown in public before. They have been divided into three sections: World Expo Medals, China in World Expo and Panorama of World Expo.China in World Expo is one of the highlights, with a multitude of valuable documents and paintings vividly depicting China’s involvement in the expo. More than 60 objects, ranging from engravings and photographs to commemorative plates and o. cial documents, will be up for grabs with many of the pieces more than 150 years old.A wooden engraving is one of the most precious items in this section. It portrays Queen Victoria greeting Xu Rongcun, the fi rst Chinese person to attend a world exposition, in 1851 in London.Xu Rongcun was a businessman who made his reputation in Shanghai for high-quality silk and tea. When hearing about the 1851 Great London Exposition, he shipped 12 boxes of Yun-Kee silk for display. The exhibition lasted for several months and brought enormous popularity to Yun-Kee silk, also earning Xu a bronze medal for manufacturing and handicrafts at the fair.Tea ceremony performers at Paris’ 1867 exposition.Aside from the engraving, which marks China’s earliest appearance at a world expo, a desk screen from 1904 is a beautiful piece from the Saint Louis World’s Fair. The screen depicts the Virgin Mary dressed in the costume of Ci Xi, Empress of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), holding Jesus in her left arm. Jesus is also wearing typical Qing clothes. The fact that this piece is made by Shanghai craftsmen based on a painting by Shanghai artist Liu Dezhai, reveals both sentiments at the time and China’s continual involvement in the event.According to China Guardian Auctions, the desk screen has enormous historical signifi cance as it is rare a combination of Chinese and Western styles and also marks the development of Catholicism in China. The starting price for this piece it is estimated at 1.5 million yuan ($219,656), the highest starting price for world exposition items on auction. The Panorama of World Expo section features a series of pictures and images, among which a 6.75-meterlong wooden engraving is expected to draw the most attention.Collector Tong Bingxue has been interested in the genre since 2002 when Shanghai won its bid for the 2010 World Expo. He has collected hundreds of objects from past expos, especially items related to China. "I’m very interested in this. It’s like picking up bit by bit those lost memories," Tong told the Globa过滤机 passenger elevator lithium batteries OA系统 china elevator クレジットカード 現金化 过滤器 クレジット 現金化 深圳装饰公司

China may levy 5% tax on aluminum importsPublished: 17 Feb 2009 18:30:10 PSTFeb. 17, 2009 (China Knowledge) – China may impose a 5% tax on imports of primary aluminum beginning in March because domestic stocks in primary aluminum are rising, smelter officials and traders said on Monday.Reinstating the aluminum import tax, which was canceled two years ago, will prompt domestic importers to cancel or put off imports of tens of thousands tons of primary aluminum in the next few weeks.China supplies more aluminum than it consumes. In order to help smelters suffering from weak demand, the State Reserves Bureau (SRB) purchased 290,000 tons of primary aluminum from eight smelters, resulting in domestic aluminum prices higher than imported aluminum prices. The resulting increase in imports put even more pressure on the domestic producers. The SRB bought 150,000 tons of aluminum last December from Chinalco, China’s top aluminum producer and the parent of Aluminum Corp of China Ltd (Chalco)<601600><2600><ACH>. It may purchase 300,000 to 500,000 tons in March and another 300,000 to 400,000 tons in May, said a smelter official.Copyright © 2009 http://www.chinaknowledge.comSend feedback or comments to: news@chinaknowledge.comFor more news, financial weekly reports, business guides to China and other premium information, subscribe to China Knowledge today: To access our page on Bloomberg, type CKFI Related TopicsChina News冷热冲击试验机 外汇保证金交易 lithium batteries 除湿机 CFD dental bearings 弹簧 car sun shades kitchen cabinets wholesale

How much stimulus does China’s auto market need (2)?Published: 03 Sep 2009 18:41:03 PSTIn my last column I have talked about the central government’s fiscal policy to support growth in the China car market, in particular the reduction of purchase tax for low displacement vehicles, and the remarkable success of this measure, both in boosting sales as well as strengthening consumer confidence. Today, I want to focus on two additional incentive programs and their presumed impact on the development of the domestic auto market: foremost the “old for new” trade-in program as well as the subsidy program for buying alternative energy vehicles. The trade-in program, also known as “cash for clunkers” has been a successful initiative in Germany and the US to bring consumers back into vehicle dealerships amid the economic downturn by offering to them quite considerable cash incentives (3,500 Euros respectively 2,500 USD) for scrapping their old car and purchasing a new one. In China, this program was initially introduced in rural areas to encourage farmers to buy minivans and light buses, and subsequently enhanced to consumers in Tier 1 cities and several provinces along the coastal line. This move was less motivated by the desire to increase new car sales – at the time of its enhancement in June 2009 it was already clear that the passenger vehicle market has picked up – but rather to “clean up” the market and eliminate the most polluting cars on the road, i.e. those registered before 2003. The idea to modernize the vehicle parc is most laudable, as it makes way for penetrating more quickly State IV technology into the market. And for several reasons it seems to make sense to concentrate on the most developed areas first – consumer affluence, availability of high quality fuels, etc. – and to spare the inland. So far so good! The Chinese trade-in program for cars exerts considerable influence on the vehicle market structure, though, which potentially affects the sound development of the auto service industry. Older cars require more repairs, and while in China the 4S dealerships remain a preferred service point in the post-warranty period (after 2 years ownership), independent workshops become increasingly popular with growing car age. A considerable part of their target group risks to vanishing with the trade-in. Also, the passenger vehicle market on the mainland is comparably young, with a length of average vehicle ownership of more or less 5 years. We have come to a point in time where the replacement of these (sort of) “first generation” passenger cars will considerably fuel the development of the used car market. If the trade-in program succeeds, a non-negligible number of vehicles destined for a second hand usage (mostly in the inland) may be deprived of their next usage purpose. Wenzhou, China’s economic bellwether, eyes recoveryPublished: 08 Mar 2009 17:54:26 PST BEIJING, March 7 – The city of Wenzhou in easternChina, an export-oriented manufacturing mecca, is seeing aneconomic recovery thanks to Beijing’s stimulus measures and thecapacity of privately owned local firms to address challenges. Renowned for its free-wheeling entrepreneurs, Wenzhou is abarometer of China’s industrial economy. Businessmen from thecity, in Zhejiang province south of Shanghai, have invested inproperty across China and set up shop around the world. Shao Zhanwei, the city’s Communist Party secretary, saidWenzhou was targeting 9 percent growth this year, up from 8.5percent in 2008. That was below the national rate of 9.0percent. ”I’m sure that things will turn better in March as comparedwith the first two months, and in the second quarter as comparedwith the first quarter,” Shao told Reuters in an interview onthe sidelines of the annual meeting of parliament. ”The economy will keep accelerating quarter by quarter.” A recent survey of 7,300 big local firms showed that about74 percent had been running at full capacity since the Lunar NewYear holidays ended a month ago, while electricity consumptionhad gradually picked and was almost back to pre-slowdown levelsby the end of February, Shao said. ”On the one hand, the global financial crisis has yet tobottom out,” Shao said. ”On the other hand, companies are betterable to expand into new markets and look for alternative ways toaddress the crisis.” EXPORT WORRIES Shao said Beijing’s 4 trillion yuan stimulus package andaccompanying measures to boost its 10 key industries wouldbenefit local firms such as CHINT Group. Nan Cunhui, chairman of CHINT, which makespower-distribution and communications equipment, said orders inFebruary were up by two-thirds from a year earlier and by 92percent from January. The timing of the Lunar New Year holiday, which fell inFebruary in 2009 and January in 2008, is a recipe for volatilityin orders and output early in the year. But Nan said of the jump in new business: ”This shows we arefeeling the impact of the country’s infrastructure investment.” CHINT plans to invest 2 billion yuan this year to upgradeits factories producing high- and low-voltage electrical gear.It will also plough 5 billion yuan into a solar energy projectlaunched in 2008 in Hangzhou, the provincial capital, he said. Shao said the main concern of Wenzhou as a whole right nowwas the outlook for exports; shipments of leather shoes toRussia were falling and barriers were going up overseas againstChinese-made goods, he said. Net exports account for almost 40 percent of Wenzhou’seconomic growth. Another recent survey, this time of 873 local firms, showedalmost one-third was experiencing falling orders, particularlyfrom overseas; another 9.3 percent of respondents said they weregetting next to no new business at all. But compared with other parts of China, Shao said companiesin Wenzhou would be the first to emerge from the global crisis. The city’s exports fell 1.4 percent in January from a yearearlier, compared with a nationwide drop of 17.5 percent, andshipments to the United States and Europe actually rose du净化工程 电磁流量计 ツーショットダイヤル lithium battery 联轴器 refractories china 深圳罗湖搬家 超声波清洗机
